Battery Storage Overview

Battery Storage connects to your household or business power and is normally charged by a solar power system. Depending on the power tariff, the battery storage can also be charged using lower cost power from the grid, for example, between midnight and 7am.

Battery storage can be used to: 

  • Provide power to your home or business during peak power tariff periods when grid power is very costly
  • Provide power to your home or business at any set times to decrease the power taken from the grid
  • Provide backup power to your home or business during a blackout.  Not all battery storage systems are capable of providing backup power

There are two types of battery storage systems: 

  1. AC Coupled.  This is a battery storage system that connects to any home or business.  It comes with its own inverter/charger, so it is separate to the solar power system.  It can therefore be used in cases where there is an existing solar power system.  There are many products in this category, including Tesla Powerwall.
  2. DC Coupled.  There are a few types of DC Coupled connections.  The main one is where a battery storage system connects to a solar hybrid inverter that has a battery connection as well as connections for the solar power panels.

SOLARWATT Flex battery storage is modular.  The size can start from 4.8kWh and increase to 57.6 kWh in increments of 2.4kWh.

Fronius/BYD Battery Storage

The Fronius GEN24 Plus is a solar hybrid inverter that is made in Austria.  Fronius has long been considered the best of the best solar power inverters on the market.  Being a solar hybrid inverter, the GEN24 Plus can
 
  1. connect just battery storage
  2. connect battery storage and additional solar power panels.
 
The Fronius GEN24 Plus is a reliable way to provide single phase and three phase battery backup if there is a power blackout.  Most other solutions, including Tesla Powerwall can only provide single phase battery backup.
 

BYD Battery Box Premium HVS/HVM.  Founded in 1995 in China, BYD started out as a battery maker and entered the automobile industry in 2003.  BYD’s cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery ensures maximum safety and long life cycle.

BYD battery systems are modular.  The HVM series can start at 8.3kWh and be expanded over time up to 66.2kWh
